ABOUT

Kenny Wong can be best described as a pioneer in Singapore's technical theatre production field.

Kenny believes strongly that theatre, in all its form, is a collaborative endeavour where creative people come together to innovate and create shows that are greater than the sum of each individual's part. This approach has seen Kenny deliver ground-breaking productions.

Kenny played a significant role in the pre-opening preparations for the Esplanade, as well as its grand opening as its first Production Manager. He is also instrumental in the forming of the Technical Theatre Association of Singapore (TTAS) of which he served as its Founding President. Kenny was also the Programme Leader of the BA(Hons) Technical Theatre Arts course at LASALLE College of the Arts. He was responsible for the development and management of Singapore’s first degree programme in Technical Theatre. On top of that, Kenny has also lectured and taught at Republic Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, the Esplanade, New York University - TischAsia and the Inter-cultural Theatre Institute (formerly TTRP).

Kenny is a recipient of an EDB scholarship to study at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), as well as a training award from the British Council to study in the UK.  He has also been responsible for initiating AsiaLight, which is an Asia Pacific conference of theatre lighting professionals, as well as the Technical Theatre Network Asia (TTNA) Forum.

Kenny worked on many productions for Singapore companies like Theatreworks,  Singapore Lyric Opera, Wild Rice and Toy Factory, as well as with international companies like the Generating Company (UK) and the Adelaide Festival Trust. More recently, he was Production Manager for Voyage de la Vie at Resorts World Sentosa and Technical Director for the National Day Parade 2011, SEA Games Opening & Closing Ceremonies 2015 and the National Day Parade 2016.

In addition to working on shows, Kenny was also the Theatre Consultant for Theatreworks’ arts space 72-13, and he worked as Lighting Consultant on the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2005, Aichi, Japan. Kenny also sat on the Steering Committee for the refurbishment of Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall, plus serving on various National Arts Council panels, including the National Arts Award selection panel for Theatre and the Arts Scholarship panel.

In recognition for his achievement and outstanding contribution to the technical theatre field in Singapore, Kenny was conferred the Culture Award 2005 by the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI).

Kenny returned to the Esplanade in 2021 and is currently serving as the centre's first local Head of Technical Production.
